Lincoln Memorial University Multicultural Student Services and the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum present a film series this February to mark Black History Month. On Tuesday, February 20, enjoy a FREE public screening of Loving.

"Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Ruth Negga). From acclaimed writer/director Jeff Nichols, Loving celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Their civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry – and their love story has become an inspiration to couples ever since."

7:00 PM - 10:00 PM To Kill a Mockingbird: Black History Month Film Series

Lincoln Memorial University Multicultural Student Services and the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum present a film series this February to mark Black History Month. On Tuesday, February 27, enjoy a FREE public screening of To Kill a Mockingbird.

"Gregory Peck won an Oscar for his brilliant performance as the Southern lawyer who defends a black man accused of rape in this film version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The way in which it captures a time, a place, and above all, a mood, makes this film a masterpiece. The setting is a dusty Southern town during the Depression. A white woman accuses a black man of rape. Though he is obviously innocent, the outcome of his trial is such a foregone conclusion that no lawyer will step forward to defend him - except Peck, the town's most distinguished citizen. His compassionate defense costs him many friendships but earns him the respect and admiration of his two motherless children."

Free popcorn and refreshment will be provided beginning at 7:00pm in the Museum entrance. Following at 7:15pm, the movie will begin. Rating: PG.

6:30 PM - 8:30 PM Of the People, By the People, For the People: The Citizen as Public Servant

The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum is proud to present Of the People, By the People, and For the People, a free program and discussion on modern citizenship explored through the words of Abraham Lincoln. This project is funded in part by a grant from Humanities Tennessee, an independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Through six separate public conversations led by Lincoln Memorial University scholars and museum professionals, the program seeks to forge common connections and a positive dialogue about citizenship and its responsibilities. Our fourth conversation, "Citizenship at the State Level" will allow the audience to read primary source documents related to Abraham Lincoln's conception of the idea of government when he was a Representative for the state of Illinois in the United States Senate. LMU professor Dr. Michael Toomey and Museum Curator Steven Wilson will provide the audience with background on Lincoln's journey to and experience in state government. Following this, the audience will be encouraged to think about their own position as citizens within their state.

All attendees to the free event will receive a free guidebook, Of the People, By the People, and For the People that contains an annotated Declaration of Independence and Constitution, writings from Abraham Lincoln's life, and points for consideration and conversation. Each of the six conversations in this series can be found in the booklet.
