Tad's Tots is a free monthly program for children 0-5 and their caretakers

During this month’s special program, we’ll learn how Abraham Lincoln was not just a president, he was an inventor! Together, we'll read My First Biography: Abraham Lincoln. Then, we'll talk about how Lincoln used his brain to solve a problem that he encountered as a young man piloting the Ohio River. We'll end our time together with a gallery tour and craft!

Tad's Tots is always a free event, but registration is required. If you register and are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can make spaces available for this popular program. If you have additional questions, please contact the Program Coordinator at 423-869-6607.

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Lecture on Fake News by Dr. Amber Roessner

Fake news became a growing concern after the 2016 U.S. presidential election, but the phenomenon did not arise from the ether. Fake news is a phenomenon as old as the news itself, and attention to its Progressive Era iteration offers a useful means for rediscovering strategies for both fighting fake news and shoring up journalism’s commitment to the truth.

Dr. Amber Roessner
An associate professor in the University of Tennessee's School of Journalism & Electronic Media, Dr. Lori Amber Roessner teaches the history & principles of journalism and media, mass communications history, media reporting, depth reporting, literary journalism, and advanced sports writing. Roessner recently was honored with the American Journalism Historians Association's 2017 Award for Excellence in Teaching.

6:00 PM One Evening in May: An Appalachian Ballad and Story Swap
In 1917, British folklorist Cecil Sharp came to the Appalachian mountains in search of American folk traditions. What he found was a "community in which singing was as common and almost as universal a practice as breathing." The repertoires of these singers included English and Scottish ballads, “love songs" as the singers called them, that had been passed down from the early European settlers of the region. His published collection, English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians, includes multiple versions of 122 distinct ballads. Several of these were collected on the campus of LMU. Today, this tradition continues with young singers from across the Appalachian region. Join Claiborne County native Ian Kirkpatrick May 12 at 6pm as he welcomes old friends and new acquaintances to perform together for the first time in the LMU Duke Hall, Sam & Sue Mars Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10, or $5 for LMU students. Money will be collected at the door. This event is sponsored by LMU Arts in the Gap. All proceeds go directly to the artists.
