6:30 PM - 8:30 PM Community Discussion on Good Citizenship: Of the People, By the People, For the People

The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum is proud to present Of the People, By the People, and For the People, a free program and discussion on modern citizenship explored through the words of Abraham Lincoln, to local residents beginning on Thursday, October 5, 2017. This project is funded in part by a grant from Humanities Tennessee, an independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Through six separate public conversations led by Lincoln Memorial University scholars and museum professionals, the program seeks to forge common connections and a positive dialogue about citizenship and its responsibilities. To many, Abraham Lincoln illustrates the value and responsibilities of citizenship. Individuals on both sides of the political spectrum claim Lincoln as their own. This fact presents an opportunity for the community to use the life and ideals of the former president as a starting point for constructive discussion about modern thoughts on citizenship.

The first public discussion will take place on Thursday, October 5, 2017, within the Arnold Auditorium of the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum. "An Introduction to Lincoln and Citizenship," will allow the audience to read primary source documents related to Lincoln's words on citizenship in the 1850s and then consider how citizenship is viewed in the present. Lincoln Memorial University history scholars and museum professionals will guide the audience in discussing the connections of the past to the present. The session will conclude with audience members sharing their thoughts with one another, asking questions, and voicing observations about both teh past and present. Additionally, all attendees to the free event will receive a free guidebook, Of the People, By the People, and For the People that contains an annotated Declaration of Independence and Constitution, writings from Abraham Lincoln's life, and points for consideration and conversation.

The first session of Of the People, By the People, and For the People will also include light refreshments and the unveiling of our new upstairs gallery, "Lincoln, the Constitution, and Citizenship." Be the first to explore the new area, learn more about citizenship as it was understood in the 1800s and in the present, and interact with the exhibits. Future months will include discussions on the right to vote, citizenship at the local level, citizenship at the state level, citizenship at the national level, and public service.

Individuals and groups are welcome to attend. Registration is not required, but is suggested. To learn more, please contact Museum Program Coordinator Natalie Sweet at 423-869-6607, or email natalie.sweet@lmunet.edu.

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Tad's Tots: Lincoln Loved Animals!

Tad's Tots is the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum's free monthly program for children 0-5 and their caretakers.

Abraham Lincoln was known for his kind heart towards animals. Caregivers and their children can join us at the museum as we read Abe Lincoln and the Muddy Pig together. Then, we’ll tour the galleries and learn about some of the animals that the Lincolns kept as pets. Following the tour, we’ll make a puppet of Tad Lincoln’s pet goat.
